Episode: Episode 4
Our role: Director of Photography services for the Newcastle sequences
About the programme
Beyond the Scorecard is a five-part sports documentary series produced by Sunny Side Up Media for Sky Sports Golf. It follows amateur golfer Josh Simpson as he travels across the UK while attempting to break the world record for the most golf courses played in one year.
Throughout the series, Josh meets people whose lives have been transformed by golf. We provided Director of Photography services for the Newcastle sequences in Episode 4, featuring Matthew “Murph” Murphy, lead singer and guitarist of The Wombats.
The challenge
The sequence combined active crazy golf with an open conversation about how the sport has helped Murph manage anxiety and depression.
Our challenge was to capture the movement, humour and spontaneous moments of the game without interrupting the contributors or distracting from the personal story at the centre of the scene.
Our approach
We used a responsive factual filming style that allowed Josh and Murph’s conversation to develop naturally. Camera positions and movement adapted to the action, capturing gameplay, reactions and quieter exchanges as they happened.
The approach balanced observational coverage with carefully composed images. This gave the production flexible material for the edit while keeping the contributors comfortable and the conversation authentic.
Deliverables

The outcome
The completed Newcastle sequence brings together the energy of the activity and the honesty of the conversation. Responsive camera work keeps the scene visually engaging while allowing Murph’s experience of anxiety, depression and golf to remain the focus.
Our contribution formed part of Episode 4 of Beyond the Scorecard, supporting Sunny Side Up Media with experienced regional crew and broadcast-ready factual cinematography.
